The Australian Government is conducting a nationwide test of its new emergency warning system on Monday 27 July. Geelong residents do not need to do anything.
Geelong residents who receive a sudden loud, siren-like alert on their mobile phone tomorrow afternoon should not be alarmed. It is a planned government test.
The Australian Government will test the new AusAlert emergency warning system nationally on Monday 27 July 2026. In Victoria, the test will happen at 2:00pm AEST. Australian Government Department of Health
A test Critical Alert will be sent to all compatible mobile devices in Australia, including most phones and some smart watches and tablets. Devices will vibrate and play a siren-like warning sound for about 10 seconds, and an AusAlert message will appear on screen clearly stating it is a test. Ausalert
You cannot opt out of receiving Critical Alerts. The alert may sound even if your device is set to silent or Do Not Disturb mode. If receiving the test may cause stress or harm, you will need to turn your device off or switch to aeroplane mode before 2:00pm and remain in aeroplane mode for at least one hour afterwards. AusAlert will be used to warn people about bushfires, floods, cyclones, severe weather, public health emergencies and security incidents when it officially launches in October 2026. Australian Government Department of Health
AusAlert messages are sent in English. For people who speak another language or want to support someone who does, translated information is available at ausalert.gov.au. The alert may be distressing for some people, including those living with cognitive impairment, dementia or sensory sensitivity. Community members are encouraged to prepare those in their care before the test time.
